Effects of brown fused alumina on the strength of vitrified abrasive tools

The main chemical content of brown fused alumina is Al2O3 which is 95% min, and some amount of Fe, Ti, Sio2, Ca and Mg. Results show that the impurities such as Fe, Ti, Ca and Mg that exist in the surface of brown fused alumina grains will react with bond under high temperature, resulting in the apparent cracks, pores, holes and crystals forming on the reaction interface of abrasive grains and bond, and consequently the strength of ceramic abrasive wheel is reduced; however, if the surface of brown fused alumina grains are properly treated, for example by acid cleaning, coating or calcined in high temperature, the strength of vitrified abrasive tools can be enhanced.
